Stage 2: Ocean Adventure Begins
The Ocean Adventure Schools Programme provides pupils and teachers with classroom activities and a fully integrated on-line visual teaching aid with structured tasks and challenges for learners. The programme has two levels incorporating marine life and sailing knowledge and a number of challenges to test the pupils both in the classroom and online.
Classroom tasks include:
- A ‘Class Wallchart and DVD’ with the teachers pack.
- ‘Marine World Lessons’ provide teachers and students with lesson plans covering topics such as Ireland’s Maritime History, Sailing and the Weather etc.
- ‘Get Involved Cards’ is a ‘pack of cards’ that can be used for ‘warm up tasks’, ‘assignments’ and ‘competitions’ to get pupils to explore the ‘marine world’ lessons/topics further and prepare them for the online challenges ahead.
Online tasks include:
- ‘Virtual Spectator’, which is a unique satellite tracker system for following the Volvo Ocean Race Teams on their journey around the world. This system uses satellite GPS and land-based communication services to provide position and situation data displayed on a world chart.
- The ‘Podcasts and Newsfeeds’ provide a real insight into the day to day life at sea, the crew and equipment onboard.
- ‘Puzzles’ will provide word challenges to test their knowledge online. ‘Polls’ will provide an online voting facility for pupils to rate who may reach the next port 1st etc. and ‘Weblinks’ will provide important links to connect with local sailing clubs and associations.
